You had some good answers already down there.I can only add a little more.
There are only 2 aims, either for yourself or for others. In philosophy,it is the Self and the Other.
Let us suppose that you may want to learn English for yourself, and you want your English (L2) to be as good as your mother tongue (MT).Here are some of the possible answers.
1.If your MT is Chinese you know already that MT and L2 are different.Based on linguistic determinism, different languages mean different thinking and even different successes.Maybe your L2 is even better than your MT,in some areas. Then you may want to say sth.or write sth.that you cannot do in your MT.Maybe you want to win a Nobel prize which not many can win in speaking MT and writing MT and you want to use L2 to win.
2.Grandson of the creator of Berlits schools,Charles Berlitz, contends that "On the world island where we all live it is increasingly important for us to understand the cultures and languages of our neighbours and, through this, how they think.Perhaps you would like to understand other cultures,L2 cultures, using L2,instead of MT.
3.Understanding the same phenomenon in MT and L2,in many cases,is not the same, unless even L2 is translated into MT and everything is actually understood in MT.
4.To conclude,if you want to learn something for yourself, you enhance your ability. If you want to learn something for, say, the preparation of a test, you improve your ability.
It all depends on how you think and how you choose.
Good luck.

For different cultures. Moreover, researches indicates that people who are able to speak two or more languanes are general "smarter" than thise who only speak one language. The smarter here means more aware of the social differences, which may simply lead to better people skills.

of course.English is crucial to my career life.

If u just want to stay in China and just mind your own business without interact with foreign ppl, well, learning English so hard will certainly not do u any good unless you are an English major student.
But on the other hand, since we know China is now a member of the WTO , so I think you have to admit that you can't run away from seeing or hearing English(from Ads, songs and etc.) unless ur living in the rural places don't you?
Plus, if you hate English too much, why ur still using it to ask this pointless question anyway?
