I attended a dinner party in India.The hosts were a colonial official and his wife.A discussion that focused on whether women have outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era sprang up between a young girl and a major.When people argued with each other,a cobra moved into the room,came under the table and crawled across the foot of the hostess.She stared straight ahead,her muscles contracting slightly.She motioned to the native boy standing behind her chair and whispered something to him.The boy placed a bowl of milk on the veranda just outside the open doors.I pretended to play a game in order that people around the table wouldn’t move to threaten the cobra.After a while,the cobra emerged and made for the milk.The hostess gave a good example that women could face a crisis with perfect self-control.
