As to "feeling" about the learning process, I would say it's like climbing a mountain. It is tough at the begining - when you have a lower level, you try to memorize some commonly used phrases, then you want to improvise and try to actually apply it in a conversation like "I wanna catch you later, seeya" (sorry this may not be a good example), and the difficulty this is you are learning in CHINA, not the USA or England. With whom you will actually talk to in this way? It also comes tough when you have to improve your pronunciation. Everyone has an accent and you can't fake it. But at the end, it feels good... when you are making friends with foreigners, when you understand their jokes, when you can eventually have some laughters instead of sleepless nights of study.
