Thebusiness of on-line shopping so far as has been disappointing for thepioneering retailers who are already offering their services. The problem isthat consumers, who say they are interested in the services, are mostly “justlooking”.
TheInternet offers, among other things, “an electronic mall” with hundreds ofretailers selling everything from computers to soaps. As with anything on theInternet, it is highly decentralized so reports of sales are not alwayscorrect. But many of the reports are disappointing.
Butit is far too soon to announce the end of electronic retailing. One reason, sayresearchers and service providers, is that consumers are only beginning tounderstand the possibilities of the new technology.
On-line shopping allowsconsumers to research their purchases and communicate directly with the sellerfor product service and support. The new services also promise visuals ofquality goods equal to those on television.
Today, not many consumershave equipment in their homes capable of receiving such visuals andinformation. But Kingsley & CO. says that electronic shopping business will reach$4 billion to $10 billion a year in the United States by the year 2008. Thatmeans just 51 percent of the US homes will have the technologyneeded to make no-line shopping work, says George Sampson, director of Kingsley& CO.
In the end, the success ofon-line shopping may turn on something as simple --- and as difficult --- as changingthe public’s idea of how to shop. The problem with consumers is that it isvery difficult for them to recognize whether or not they want a product untilthey have already tried it.
