住在大沼泽的怪物史莱克独自过着自在的生活。而有一天，一群被童话王国的国王赶出来的角色们的到来却彻底打破了史莱克安逸的生活。于是大为不满的史莱克和一只罗嗦的驴子踏上了“上 访 之 路”。此时的国王则正在为选谁去营救被困在高塔中的菲奥娜公主而烦恼。国王见史莱克强壮过人，便答应以解救公主为条件交换大沼泽。就在史莱克顺利的解救了公主之后，却发现公主在夜晚会变成怪物，而二人心中的爱意也因此无法相互表达。最终真爱打破了外表的阻碍，彻底变成怪物的公主和史莱克幸福的生活在了一起。
