从1978年开始，我国的改革开放进行了30年。从历史长河的角度看，30年不算长，但这个30年在中国所导致的社会变迁却是深刻的，其影响是深远的。因此，对这个30年，以及之前的年代进行反思，就十分必要。反思是一个暂停，是为了更好地前行。为了让历史前行的脚步走得更顺，社会科学理论界的反思必须深刻、全面、到位。
消费变迁的研究比较少见，这不能不说是一种遗憾。消费问题是社会变迁研究中绕不开的问题。新中国成立以来，尤其是改革开放以来的许多制度安排与思想观念，都同消费问题有关。可以说，离开了消费问题，对当代中社会变迁的反思都不够全面和完整。从消费问题的视角来审视中国当代社会变迁，可以发现许多在表面上不相干现象之间的内在联系。本书就是一部从消费视角来审视中国当代社会变迁的著作。
本书的写作引用了大量的政策文献资料和访谈资料，这样做符合了学术规范（充分的证据与论证），但也因此大大削弱了可读性，因为资料是枯燥无味的东西。尽管如此，我还是更倾向于多引用证据。我国学术界的一个现象是缺乏耐心，表现在论著写作上，就是作者直奔结论，而不注重论证过程，不重视交代证据与事实，尤其不注意交代我们已经很熟悉的事实。当然，从读者的角度看，论证与引证的过程，显得较为枯燥。为此，我建议读者，尤其是非学术界的读者朋友，不妨先读第一章，然后跳过中间部分，直接读最后一章，最后再回过头来读中间部分。或许这样你就不会觉得那么枯燥。
如果从研究立项算起，本书的写作历经七个寒暑，算得上是“难产”之作。即便如此，我依然觉得拿不出手，因为感觉还有很多的文献需要浏览，还有很多的资料细节需要补充，还有很多的观点需要推敲，还有很多的论证需要完善，此外，行文的可读性也需要提高。但是，目前的状况实在不允许我腾出更多的时间花在本书上——有太多的其他事情要做，有些是自己想做的，有些是被“逼”的。“人在江湖，身不由己”，既然分身无术，只能重新配置时间这种稀缺资源。好在我们似乎是告别了“大话语”、“大真理”的时代。在今天的互联网时代，一切文本似乎都是草稿，都是暂时的。祈望出经典之作，即便不是矫情，似乎也是不自量力。如此一想，便有几分释然。当然，这样说并非为敷衍之作辩护。一部出版的著作，至少要符合学术规范，观点要创新，并且要在力所能及的范围内精益求精。
