Nokia dials up $2.5B in China deals
Mobile phone company inks infrastructure supply contract with China Mobile, signs handset purchase agreement with China Postel.

HELSINKI (Reuters) -- Mobile phone giant Nokia said Tuesday it has signed network and handset deals with Chinese customers that will be worth more than €2 billion ($2.55 billion) this year.
The Finnish company said it has won a €580 million order to supply infrastructure equipment to China Mobile to expand its mobile network this year.



It said deliveries have already started under terms of the contract, which includes radio and core network equipment, as well as infrastructure services.
"The network expansion order is quite significant," Opstock analyst Hannu Rauhala said.
Nokia also signed a memorandum of cooperation with China Postel (PTAC) to boost handset sales, under terms of which the Chinese national mobile phone distributor is expected to buy about €1.5 billion of mobile handsets from Nokia in 2006.
Nokia shares (Charts) in the mobile phone gained 2.9 percent on the announcement, but later eased to stand 1.9 percent higher at €15.39, compared with a DJStoxx European technology index up 1.8 percent.
Nokia is the largest player in the Chinese mobile phone market, with more than a quarter of all sales.
But it faces fierce competition from rivals like U.S.-based Motorola (Charts) in the race for customers in the world's largest handset market, which researchers estimate is growing 25 to 30 percent a year.
In China's networks market Nokia also faces competition from Sweden's Ericsson (Charts) and Chinese rivals Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp.
