Tools hold the components by vacuum and transport them mainly to a chuck on the assembly unit.Vacuum level sensors detect if components are picked up correctly.Most of the pick-up tools are just for transportation purpose.
The pick-up tool for the submount (see Fig 3) is however different.It picks a submount out of the tray pocket and directly activates it with electric power.To contact the submount pads needles of a probe card are pushed gently to it.
After contact is generated the assembly machine runs an electro-optical test by which the submount functionality is approved.
