经过我的反复思考，我的观点如下：
the way in which...这种结构in which...做的就是way的定语从句，这毫无疑问；
the way that...这种结构，that...做的是way的同位语从句，因为同位语从句中that在从句可以不做成分且不能省略，而定语从句中that必须作成分。同位语的含义是：一个名词(或其它形式)对另一个名词或代词进行修饰，限定或说明。这里的that...就是对way进行的说明；
the way直接+句子这种结构，并不是the way that...的省略形式，因为同位语从句中的that是不可以省略的。那是怎么回事呢？因为某些名词有一种用法，叫名词连词化。即该名词后可以不加连接词从而直接引导从句。way就是这样一个单词，the way在这里既是名词，又可以当作连词来引导一个解释说明自身的“同位语从句”，这并不是普通的同位语从句，而是一种特殊用法。另外举个例子，the moment也是可以名词连词化的，即the moment he saw me=the moment when he saw me.
